The Stages of Tinnitus
How often do you hear the noises? Identifying your stage can help determine the best course of action.
Stage 1: Early Stages
Frequency: Occurs for less than 1 minute, at least once a week.
Causes: Often stress, muscle tension, and a lack of sleep.
Advice: Try not to become stressed about it. Analyse your daily routine, reduce stress factors, and relax. Daily meditation is recommended.
Stage 2: Acute Tinnitus
Frequency: Occurs for less than 1 hour, at least once a week.
Causes: Noise trauma (shots, loud music), a previous illness, or abnormal blood pressure.
Advice: This may be the last chance to treat tinnitus without costly intervention. Change your lifestyle: less stress, good sleep, more relaxation, and drink enough water. Consider using earplugs to prevent further hearing damage. A daily 30-minute sound therapy is highly recommended.
Stage 3: Subacute Tinnitus
Frequency: More than 1 hour, at least once a week.
Advice: Holistic treatment is recommended and should be carried out promptly. Once tinnitus becomes chronic, the chances of a cure are decreased. Soft laser treatment and meditation therapy should be considered.
Stage 4: Chronic Tinnitus
Frequency: Constant - you’ve already suffered for longer than a year.
Advice: The chance of 100% recovery is less at this stage, however, not impossible. There are still opportunities available for the reduction of the tinnitus noise, such as soft laser treatment and therapies focused on improving quality of life.
Understanding Tinnitus More
Current medical opinion is that tinnitus is the result of complex workings of several body systems. The hearing pathway employs a complex filtering system, allowing us to “tune-in” to important sounds. Once you become aware of tinnitus, your brain's filters “tune-in” more, and as frustration sets in, it gets worse. The good news is the filters can be trained to ignore the signal, known as “habituation”.
